Every other story you have ever been told was told afterward, by somebody who already knew how it came out.
Not this one. Each episode is one unbroken stretch of time, told as it happens, by a person in the middle of it: an hour in a fairground exhibit hall at closing, a snowed-in depot at eleven at night, a barn at three in the morning with a mare about to foal. The part breaks are clock times, and they move with your clock. When she says it is twenty minutes to ten, there are twenty minutes left.
Nothing bad is coming. That is the promise. It is just a long wait, and some company for it.
