One event from a man's life, told three times: the way he told it when it was new, the way he told it in middle age, and the way he tells it now.

Every man has a story he has told all his life. The fire at the elevator. The fight behind the dance hall. The loan his father turned down. The day he met his wife.
Here each one is told three times, by the same man, forty and fifty years apart. The first telling is how he saw it at twenty: proud, or wronged, or certain. The second knows something the first did not. And the third is what he has worked out at the end of a life, and it usually turns on somebody else in the story, somebody he never once thought to ask.
The listener learns something new every time. The man does too.
