Ardell drove a tractor-trailer out of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, from nineteen sixty-one to nineteen ninety-eight. Christmas trees to Dallas. Bees to California. A grand piano to a ranch widow in Montana. A wedding cake to Omaha, with the baker riding along.
The cargo is the hook and the people are the story. Every load had somebody waiting for it, and every one of them had a reason, and most of the time he did not find it out until the doors were open.
No wrecks. Weather and breakdowns, yes; danger, no. A man alone in a cab with a load he has promised to deliver, and then the long drive home empty.
