Alvina was born in nineteen thirty on a quarter section her grandfather broke by hand, nine miles from town on a road the county graded twice a year.
Every episode is one year of her life on that place, and every year has something in it: the summer the well went dry, the winter the power line finally reached the road, the flood, the auction across the way, the hired man who came for a season and stayed eleven years. There is weather and there is money and there are neighbors, and the work never quite gets done.
